South Africa is one of the few countries outside the USA where jazz music has been regarded and supported as a genuinely popular music style, rather than the preserve of an exclusive clique of discerning fans.
The history of SA Jazz is an involved and intricate one with many influences and trends, both African and foreign, creating various sub-genres and divergent styles under this broad "Jazz" banner over the better part of the last century.
This album aims, within the confines of a small space, to paint a listenable and comprehensive picture of where South African Jazz is presently in this country, and from where it has come. It is representative of the many styles and flavours that have made Jazz popular now and across time, presenting as many as possible of those great artists with profile, touching on South African Jazz's invovled past, with an eye to its future.
